Instead of broadcasting a fusillade of attack ads, Mr. Edwards is relying on himself to be the messenger.

The conventional wisdom is that Iowans hate negativity:

Again and again, though, voters warned against turning too negative. "I think there is a real risk of them beating each other up," said Mary Jo Wagner, an elementary school principal in Waterloo. "The Democrats must present a unified front."

Last time around Gephart and Dean went after each other, and it ended up hurting them, to Kerry and Edwards' benefit. But Edwards is in no position to coast, so perhaps going after Clinton in person might work better, as it doesn't seem so much like you're sending out the goons. It might seem more like legitimate criticism. I don't know, I guess we'll see...
