Zantzinger, at right, a prominent Maryland tobacco farmer then aged 24, is accompanied outside a Charles County, Md., police station by his wife, Jane, and his attorney before his 1963 manslaughter conviction for striking Hattie Carroll, a 51-year-old black barmaid, with a cane. Carroll died from a stroke later that night.
